Year 5 Forum

Good morning Year 5,

Hope you are all well.

You have already completed a week's work and we are very proud of you all. Some of you have sent in your work to the sfsremote@sfet.org.uk email address and we have really enjoyed this. You will now see there is a ' Year 5 Work Submission' form in this area (just look on the left hand side now) where you can upload any work you would like to receive feedback for. You can also comment below with any questions you have for your class teachers. But remember any technical issues still need to be emailed to sfsremote@sfet.org.uk.

Keep up the fantastic work and know that we are very proud of you all.

Mr Friend, Mr Daniell, Miss Stacey, Miss Webb, Miss Pearce and Mrs Macready

    I don't understand CH3 on today's maths
  • Tilly K 7 months ago
Hi. For the science worksheet( BP ) should I do it on the sheet or in my exercise book? I could print it if you are supposed to do it on the sheet? Thank you again.
  • Mr Daniell 7 months ago
"I don't understand CH3 on today's maths" Morning Sophie, - Firstly, write down 5 fractions (for example: 1/4, 1/2). - Then, write the percentage equivalent of each fraction, so for 1/4 it would be 25 and for a 1/2 it would be 50. - Next, write the decimal equivalent, so for 1/4 it would be 0.25 and for 1/2 it would be 0.5. - After that, copy all of these onto dominoes (see the example of dominoes on the worksheet) ensuring to mix them all up. So on one domino you could have 1/2 on the top and 0.25 on the bottom. - Finally, play a game of dominoes with somebody at home! You will need to match the equivalent representation together, so you could place 1/2 next to 0.5. If you are unsure on how to play then ask an adult, if possible, or safely look this up online. Hope that helps, have fun! Mr Daniell

"Hi. For the science worksheet( BP ) should I do it on the sheet or in my exercise book?" Good afternoon, Tilly. No need to print off the worksheet, you can write sub-headings in your home-learning book or write in full sentences to show which question you are responding to. Enjoy! Mr Daniell.

Re ...the ice cream experiment We also had a problem with the ice cream task this week as we couldn’t get the ingredients. We decided to replace the task with an experiment with melting chocolate and setting it . Hope that’s ok !

"Re ...the ice cream experiment We also had a problem with the ice cream task this week as we couldn’t get the ingredients. We decided to replace the task with an experiment with melting chocolate and setting it . Hope that’s ok!" Good afternoon. What an equally tasty alternative! Yes that's absolutely fine, if you get a chance in the near future to complete the ice-cream experiment then do, it's great fun. Hope you're enjoying the tasks this week. Mr Daniell.
  • Tilly K 7 months ago
Hello! Thank you very much Mr Daniell. My mum and I loved doing the ice cream task! It was a great idea. Thank you again.

"Hi - thanks for the maths answer sheet in today's resources. Would it be a good idea to put it in a central area so we can find it each day, and don't need to print it off (48 pages). thanks Fintan's Dad." Dear Mr Deakin, since the answers have recently been made available online to us, we will be publishing the link on the Year 5 table of work page each week. That way it's kept with the work and easy for all to find. I definitely wouldn't advise or expect anyone to print the whole 48 page document as it covers the whole year and lots of extra activities that we don't use in our programme of study - I hope that helps. Kindest regards, Mr Friend.

Hello Pippa here i just wanted to ask how many questions you expect us to do on the comprehension task?
  • Sasha Rogers 6 months ago
Hi, hope you had a great half term. Help please - I am not clear about the English grammar task. I thought you were supposed to just add the apostrophe and 's' when the word didn't end in s, yet the instructions state for singular nouns you always add the apostrophe and 's' even if the word ends in 's' already. Thank you from Sasha x
  • Mr F 6 months ago
Hello Pippa here i just wanted to ask how many questions you expect us to do on the comprehension task? Good Morning Pippa. We are suggesting that you answer as many questions as possible in the hour slot given to English. If you would like to spend more time on it and finish all of the questions, that would certainly be brilliant! Mr F
  • Miss Webb 6 months ago

Thank you from Sasha x Good Morning Sasha! The general rule is that the possessive of a singular noun is formed by adding an apostrophe and s, whether the singular noun ends in s or not. The possessive of a plural noun is formed by adding only an apostrophe when the noun ends in s, and by adding both an apostrophe and s when it ends in a letter other than s. I hope that helps! • Miss Stacey 5 months ago
Good Morning! For Lesson 3 of the Maths this week, if you do not have any interlocking cubes, I would suggest you count the blocks on the visuals provided for Challenge 1 and Challenge 2 in order to calculate the volume of the cubes. You will need to skip the following questions: Ch 2 part 3 a and part 4 b. For Challenge 3, you will need to use your imagination and perhaps try drawing the 3D shape. I hope that helps! Miss Stacey

I don’t understand how you can get to the spelling test. It isn’t on the curriculum online.
  • Mr Friend 4 months ago
Hi Larissa, Well done for finding the forum page and being the first to comment! I hope that you and your family are well and that you're enjoying the Home Learning work. Now for the 'spelling test' - do you mean the spelling task for the week or is this on Spellodrome? We aren't doing a weekly spelling test as such, it would be far too difficult to get everyone together to do it (although it is a fab idea!) but do keep using Spellodrome to stay up to date. Take care Mr F

  • Mr F 4 months ago
"Good Morning Everybody, I am not sure about which extension to do for today's math herald... Thank you. Sophie" Hi Sophie, we would normally direct you towards a specific exercise on the Maths Herald because of the time available in class but since you probably have a bit more lesson time available at home you can choose a couple that you like the look of! They are all relevant to the work for the week. Mr F
  • Daisy 4 months ago
We can't get many of the ingredients for the Ice-cream making and I don't really understand the instructions for the experiment either
  • Mr F 4 months ago
"We cant find the details of the ice experiment? The link in point 2 just takes us to a long list?" Good afternoon Olive, I've just tested the links at home and the link for Day 2 takes you to a page that give you a recipe for homemade ice cream. The Ice Experiment (Day 3 - 5) is an activity sheet that lays out the experiment for you and gives you an idea of how to record it. If that still doesn't help, email the sfsremote and we'll see what we can do. Mr F
  • Mr Daniell 4 months ago
"We can't get many of the ingredients for the Ice-cream making and I don't really understand the instructions for the experiment either" Hi Daisy, don't worry if you can't get hold of the ingredients - you could always do it another time when there are more things available in the shops. It's fun and really simple and demonstrates science in action! Have another look at the link for Days 3-5 for the experiment. Basically, you put an ice cube in a measuring cup and see how quickly it melts - if you record how much water is in the cup at regular intervals you can track how much it's melting. Give it a try and let me know how you get on! Take care, Mr Daniell

Good morning Year 5 teachers, Firstly, thank you for all your efforts in preparing the lessons whilst we are in lockdown. Whilst you are preparing next week's English topic please could you consider more of an uplifting topic as they have all been rather sad and depressing in these not so happy times and the latest one this week is a bit too close to home for an only child stuck in a house not being able to see his friends! I have a boy in tears here! Many thanks.
  • Mr Daniell 4 months ago
Good afternoon Mrs Ancell, We’re really sorry to hear that Charlie hasn’t enjoyed the last few weeks of English work. We’re trying our best to follow as close as possible to the programme we would at school so that the children don’t miss out whilst we’re closed but can appreciate this will hit close to home for lots of children. Thank you for this valuable feedback, next week is Roald Dahl so lots to look forward to there! Take care, Mr Daniell

"Hi Could you just clarify what tasks might be ok to use computer and what tasks they must hand write ? Assuming their English tasks must be hand written but generally the foundation work can be completed on computer? Have a great Easter Many thanks" You're absolutely correct. It's important that English and Maths tasks are handwritten so that handwriting and calculation processes are kept up to speed but the foundation work is well suited to computer use if you like. That might look like the whole thing being word processed or just sections, leaving spaces for drawings or annotations by hand (where appropriate). I hope that helps! Take care and have a lovely Easter. Miss Stacey

  • Miss Webb 4 months ago
"Hi Good afternoon everybody I was just wondering on link 1 Maths for Monday 20 April I didn't really get the part where you have to use the spinner please can you tell me" Hello Roshan! The instructions to use the spinner are on the page in Resource 45. You'll need to cut the circle out and use a paper clip and pencil to transform this into a spinner. Hold the paper clip in the centre of the spinner using the pencil and gently flick the paper clip with your finger to make it spin! Whatever number it points at when it stops spinning is the number you use. Then, as the challenge says, you pick a number from the cards and the number your spinner chose for you and calculate! I hope this helps you all, Miss Webb.

Dear Year 5, Well, after a very different and very exciting 2 weeks, we’ve reached the Easter holidays! We are really proud of you all and how you’ve coped with the big changes that have happened and are really enjoying seeing all of the home learning you’ve been doing - if you haven’t already, make sure you make use of SFSSubmissions to share your work with us! Lots of you have been making use of the Year 5 Forum to ask questions about your learning, we will be checking that over Easter too so please keep in touch. Lastly, as a school we are setting up the #SFSChallenge to provide some fun and games over Easter. We will share different challenges for you to try from baking to gardening and everything in between. You can send us your pictures and videos on sfssubmissions or get your parents to tweet them with the hash tag #sfschallenge. Take care of yourselves and your families over the next few weeks, keep in touch and we’ll hopefully see you all very soon. Lots of love from Mr Friend, Mr Daniel, Miss Stacey, Miss Webb, Mrs Macready and Miss Pearce

  • Mr D 4 months ago
Thank you for your observation, Fintan. You are correct - the Incas were not part of Mesoamerica and in fact came from South America (on the West coast of the continent) rather than North America. However, they occasionally get thrown into the same category as they're broadly contemporaneous with the Aztec Empire especially. Definitely a civilisation worth exploring in more detail but also worth identifying the differentiation in location and classification. Well done.

Good morning! Should the maths for today be the roman numerals or is there an error. I am a bit confused because we normally have problem solving and reasoning on a friday. Thank you
  • Miss Stacey 4 months ago
"I am struggling how to solve question 4 and 5 on lesson 4 CH3. Please can i have some help? Thank you" Hi Finlay. Let's have a look at qu4 from yesterday for you. You need to use the facts in the question to identify the numbers that it COULD be e.g. if you divide it by 4, there is 1 left so it would be any number that is 1 more than a multiple of 4 (e.g. 5,9,13...). If you list the numbers up to x12 for the 4, 6 and 2 times tables, you should find a number that appears in all three lists, that's the answer! There might be more than 1 option. I'll do qu5 seperately to avoid confusion. Miss Stacey
  • Miss Stacey 4 months ago
Hello again Finlay! So, qu5 from Thursday. The TOTAL amount of money made on the roller coaster was £1302 and each ride cost £3.10. We need to find out how many lots of £3.10 makes £1302 and therefore we need to DIVIDE (lots of suggests division or multiplication and we need to make the TOTAL smaller so we DIVIDE). £1302 divided by £3.10 (you could use a calculator to check your working) is 420 rides! Have a lovely weekend, keep up the good work :-) Miss Stacey

Hello everyone! Just a quick update on today's Maths. The last question on Roman Numerals is a great reasoning exercise and tied Mr Daniell and I in knots as we tried to solve it. Try watching the LOOM video I posted in my last comment, it talks through a way of solving this type of problem. If that doesn't help, send an email to SFSRemote and I'll see what I can do for you :-) Mr F

Good afternoon everyone, Mrs Macready has recorded a LOOM video this week that will give you guidance on both the planning in lesson 3 and the writing in lesson 4 so I put it in both sections. It will help you to write a really detailed plan today so that you can focus on your writing tomorrow, with all of the ideas and content already planned. Hope that helps! Mr F

"hi, sorry to bother you but the loom video is not working if it is the same for you or is it my internet?" Hi Olivia, which LOOM video are you struggling with? I've tested the English and Maths links from home just now and they seem to be ok. At school we found that if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer it sometimes had a funny turn - Google Chrome or Firefox usually work just fine! Hope you're well, hopefully see you in our Zoom assembly next Tuesday at 9am :-) Mr F

"what is a geometry kit plz? Thanks Finn" Hi Finlay, a geometry kit normally contains all of the things you need for drawing shapes and diagrams accurately. They would have a compass for drawing circles, protractor for measuring angles and different set squares (triangles) for drawing common angle segments. The protractor is what you're after but Alex in 5S found an online protractor if you haven't got one - very clever! Mr Daniell

Hi there Are all the maths sheets coming from the same book and if so, which one please? It uses so much ink having to print them all out, as this situation looks set to continue for at least a few more weeks, it would be great if school can direct us to the correct pages for each lesson so we can just buy a whole book - cheaper and easier. “ Good morning, should there be a extension for Thursday's maths? Did you post it up or should I reload my page. I am a bit confused because there normally is one. Enjoy! Mr F

Also, in english this week, could we just write that we were on a walk in the forest or do we have to follow the story from monday? Thank you very much.” Hi Tilly, the main idea of the project is to compare 2 different birds. How you choose to present it is entirely up to you! It could be in the form of a documentary style video or script, or more visually in a poster presentation. For the English, it is a deep and detailed description of a forest - so focusing on the setting and not a story. It could be the Forest of Sin from the Minpins or any forest you can think of! Hope that helps. Mr F

Thanks, Susie” Dear Mrs Fraser, the Maths exercises come from 2 textbooks from the Busy Ants maths scheme. I’m unsure if they are available to buy in singular (as we buy them from the publisher in class sets). At school we work in exercise books using the textbook for the questions and tasks - we would advise a similar model at home using the onscreen textbook page and then recording answers in the home learning book. That way, you aren’t printing page after page for just the one lesson. I hope that helps. All the best, Miss Stacey

"Good morning, Are all the questions in maths lesson 2 HT0 × T0 ?" Dear Mrs Spragg, Challenge 2 and 3 for Lesson 2 for Maths this week is indeed HTO x TO using the grid or partitioning methods. Challenge 1 (the first 2 questions, the title has been chopped off) is designed to help the children in accessing multiplication skills that they already have acquired (multiples and repeated addition, multiplying by multiples of 10, 100) before tackling the main task. I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Mr Daniell

"Hi Ms Stacey, hope you are well. For this week's RE are we supposed to be looking at a Naming ceremony or a Christening to compare to the Sikh Naam Karan? Thank you" Dear Lana, thanks for getting in touch - that's a great question. The 'naming ceremony' is really about welcoming a new member to the family and religion - in Christianity this is a Christening or Baptism and in Sikhism it is NaamKaran. The task is to investigate the 2 and examine the similarities and differences between the 2. You could even design your own version of a naming ceremony as an extension if you liked! I hope that helps, see you soon. Miss Stacey

"Good morning. I was wondering whether we have to use the answers booklet for maths because I always get confused as to which unit or lesson is which. Thanks." Hi Tilly, the answer booklet is still available on last week's page (WB 11th May 2020) and you're looking for Unit 10 Week 2 which starts at the very bottom of page 25 of the document and runs to the beginning of page 27. This link should also take you straight to that document http://resources.collins.co.uk/free/Busy_Ant_Maths/Busy%20Ant%20Maths%20Year%205%20Answers.pdf

"Hi, question 12 about the Iron Man says to find authorial techniques. Can you tell me what these are? Orla" Hi Orla, I hope you're enjoying the Iron Man (both book and narrated videos). An authorial technique is anything the author uses to control the reader's experience. This might be personification or metaphors, short sentences or rhetorical questions. I hope that helps! Mr F

'Hi, question 12 about the Iron Man says to find authorial techniques. Can you tell me what these are?' Hello! Authorial techniques are the techniques an author has used like repetition or capitalisation of letters. Your task is to identify them and explain why they have been used! I hope this helps! Miss Webb.

'Good morning. I was wondering whether we have to use the answers booklet for maths because I always get confused as to which unit or lesson is which. Thanks.' Hi Tilly! The unit and lesson number are at the top left of the question page. These correspond to the subheadings in the answer booklet. I know it seems a little confusing but once you've found the section it might make sense to highlight it so you know where you're looking! I hope this helps! Miss Webb.

'Good morning. I was wondering whether we have to use the answers booklet for maths because I always get confused as to which unit or lesson is which. Thanks.' Hi Tilly, if you look in the top left hand corner of today's maths lesson 'LESSON 1' , you will notice that it says: Unit 10, Week 2, Lesson 1. This is the case for every lesson! If you then scroll down on the 'ANSWERS' document, you will get to Unit 10. You then need to find the matching week and lesson. For this week, the answers begin on page 571. I hope that helps, Tilly! Mr Daniell

'Hi, question 12 about the Iron Man says to find authorial techniques. Can you tell me what these are? Orla' Hi Orla, authorial techniques is another way of saying writing techniques. Consider some of the writing techniques and features that we have discussed this year: similes, metaphors, alliteration, rhetorical questions, personification etc. I hope that helps and that you've enjoyed what you've read so far of the Iron Man. It's a fantastic story! Mr Daniell

'Hi Miss Webb--please could you explain how I am supposed to work out the answer to challenge 2 question 2 of Maths lesson 4 this week. Please could you give me your working so I understand how to approach the question. Thank you. Lucy' Hi Lucy! The question says a number has been multiplied by 4, what was the original number? You'll need to do the inverse operation by dividing it by 4. This can be done by halving the number and halving it again. You might need to add two fractions together to find the correct mixed number but we know that process. Find the common denominator and add them together. I hope this helps! Miss Webb.

  • Mr F 3 months ago
Dear All, I hope you are all having a good week and enjoying the Iron Man. Just to clear up a few questions about the English all in one go. 1. The writing task is to write a first person account of someone watching the Iron Man put himself back together. 2. The extension writing task is pretending you are a teacher responding to a child in your class telling their friends about seeing the Iron Man (You don't believe them!) 3. The difference between a phrase and a clause is a clause has a verb, a phrase doesn't (think santa CLAUSE is always on the move). 4. You only need to read chapter 1 for this week, and up to the end of chapter 3 for the week after half term. Hope that helps! Mr F

Mr. Daniell, Could you tell me what the difference is between a subordinate clause and a phrase, please? I have been hunting around but the two appear to be near identical. Many thanks! Good Morning Miles, A phrase is a group of two or more words. For example: the (determiner) tall (adjective) tree (noun)= a noun phrase. Sentences can consist of a main clause and a subordinate clause. The main clause is the part of the sentence which make sense on its own and the subordinate clause is the part of the sentence that doesn't make sense on its own. For example: - We can go for a walk in the forest, if I can find my walking shoes! We can go for a walk in the forest= main clause , if I can find my walking shoes= subordinate clause A relative clause is a type of subordinate clause because the clause including the relative pronoun, doesn't ever make sense on its own. Hope this helps! Mr Daniell

"Hi Could you just clarify what tasks might be ok to use computer and what tasks they must hand write? Assuming their English tasks must be hand written but generally the foundation work can be completed on computer?" Good morning Mrs Evans, hope you had a good weekend. Yes we would expect that the English and Maths tasks are handwritten into their home learning books (or on the final draft template in English, if possible). As you mention, using the computer for foundation tasks is absolutely fine. We have seen some great examples of work where the foundation task has been printed and pictures drawn/colourful titles added by the children onto their printed copy. I hope this is useful. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with. Many thanks, Mr Daniell.
