Welcome to Year 5
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the fantastic activities and areas of study that our 9 and 10 year old children enjoy.
During the year the children enjoy a range of texts in English, including extracts from Harry Potter and The Hobbit, bringing them to life and responding to them through drama, SPaG and writing sessions. The children become more skilled in all aspects of Maths, whilst developing confidence and fluency with their arithmetic. In Science, we delve into the wonders of space, forces, materials, marvellous mixtures, life cycles and reproduction. In History we study Tudors, Mesoamerica and the British Empire and our Geography allows us to learn about the European Union before exploring the key features of rivers and coasts. We use digital resources to programme and develop our project management skills and write code, using Kodu, in Computing.
A selection of the workshops bring this learning to life such as: a workshop on Judaism delivered by Rabbi Solomons, Gamalan music workshop, Planetarium and a day dedicated to reflecting on the exciting Tudor topic – where the children are given the opportunity to dress up and explore a range of different activities.
One of the highlights of the year is our residential trip to Osmington Bay, where we bring our geographical learning on rivers and coasts to life, during an action-packed visit to Dorset. A short visit to the Owl and Reptile centre on route, is a great way for the children to visualise their scientific learning on life cycles.
Thank you for visiting our page and hope you enjoy seeing what an exciting time we’re having.

Your child will study a wide variety of topics as part of their curriculum studies at South Farnham School. Please see below details of the curriculum content that your child will study in Year 5. Whilst each class follows the same curriculum, there will be individualised delivery based on the needs of the class.
