Read 'The Papaya that Spoke'' story. Children to begin to learn this story today with all the corresponding actions. Once learnt, children are asked to retell the whole story to a parent with the applicable actions. Children to then perform in front of the whole family.

GRAMMAR

 

 

To know the different spellings of the 'or' sound and answer questions based on a text.

 

Spelling Focus: The /or/ sound spelt /ar/ after w and qu.  There are not many of these words, e.g. war, warm, towards. Dictation to be given to the children with the spelling rule put into a sentence: Towards the end of spring the sun gets warm. What is a quarter of eight? War is not a happy thought. Discuss with the children what punctuation will be needed for the dictated sentences, i.e. capital letters and full stops.

 

Grammar Focus: Sentence: How the grammatical patterns in a sentence indicate its function as a statement, question, exclamation or command. Complete activity sheet before writing at least 1 example a statement, question, exclamation and command.

 

Examples:

Statement – The young monkey loves to eat bananas.

Question – What do young monkeys love to eat?

Exclamation – What a hungry monkey!

Command – Put down that bunch of bananas.

Children to recap the story learnt yesterday. Discuss actions. What questions would you ask about the text? Remind children that answers are found in the text and not made up. Children to create their own questions on the text for a parent or sibling to answer.

Children to start lesson by retelling the whole of the story of ‘The Papaya that Spoke’. Then, begin to think of innovations to the story, e.g. 'Once upon a time, there was a doctor who lived in the countryside. One day, he felt ravenous and so went out to pick an apple.' etc. Children to create an innovation of the story and begin to learn this story to retell to a parent or the whole family and plan on story map.

Take a minute for a personal reflection: what one thing could you do to show care for the world today / this week?

Discuss whether it is only religious people that should care for the world. Is it just up to religious people? What would happen if that was the case?

Think about why people don't always look after the world, specifically talking about waste and greed.

 

Task: Create a ‘Recycled Creature’ from recycling materials to help consider whether we are wasting the world’s resources by using so much.

Organise your family in size order. Do older children/people have larger heads? Measure each family member’s head in centimetres (cm). Create a hat for each of your family member using their head measurements. Decorate! What conclusions can you draw from the experiment?
