NB In Thursday’s extension activity, children need to share birds equally into the number of nests below before writing the associated division calculation, e.g. 10 shared between 2 is 5. They might find colours helpful when sharing the birds equally between the nests. |

Lesson 1 Posters
|
To discuss posters, slogans, ideas and answer comprehension questions. Explore the array of posters picking out key points. Recap alliteration as a persuasive literary device whereby two or more consecutive words begin with the same letter. Introduce other concepts linked to posters, including the use of bright colours, capital letters, bold fonts, short and concise language to have a strong impact on the reader. Explain that a poster is very different to a story. Discuss any unfamiliar vocabulary and make a note of its meaning.
Whilst referring back to the posters, answer the questions in full sentences. Ensure correct usage of capital letters and full stops. |

Lesson 2 Spelling
EAR SHEETS:

Children to learn spellings from sheet. LOOK/SAY/COVER/WRITE/ CHECK Spot ‘ear’ graphemes whilst reading ‘The Meerkat with the Big Ears’ text. Underline or highlight them and make a note of the grapheme’s position in each word. Can you spot them all? Can you think of any alternative spelling patterns that make the same sound as ‘ear’?
Complete the ‘ear’ word search and make a list of other words that contain the ‘ear’ grapheme. Recap the concept of a trigraph as one sound consisting of three letters. Underline or highlight the ‘ear’ trigraph in each applicable word and make a note of the ‘ear’ position in each word. Can you spot them all? Can you think of any alternative spelling patterns that make the same sound as ‘ear’?
Look at the ‘ear’ and ‘un‘ prefix slideshow. Remember the multiple alternative spelling patterns, such as ‘ear’, ‘eer’ and ‘ere’ from the first activity. Notice that the ‘ear’ trigraphs often comes at the end of words.
Reintroduce the concept of a prefix coming at the beginning/in front of a root word. This changes the meaning of the root word. When ‘un’ is used as a prefix, it often changes the root word to have the opposite meaning, e.g. ‘fair’ becomes ‘unfair’. This week, put the prefixed words into meaningful sentences whilst applying your neatest handwriting. |

Children to write, improve and complete a final version of their poster.
Use A3 or A4 paper (depending on your preference). Remember to keep phrases short and concise to persuade the reader to attend the event. Key information includes: name and place of fair, time, slogan, cost, date, activities, a rhetorical question and alliteration as a very persuasive literary device. Add colour, capital letters and pictures to make the poster as aesthetically pleasing and appealing as possible. |

To know changes within living memory.
In history, the children have been looking at old-fashioned toys. Today, they will be thinking about and looking at more modern toys. Get the children to see if they can find any toys that move and are made from different materials. Go through the PDF talking about the pictures and who the toy may be made for, e.g. babies, toddlers. Your child then can choose a toy that they can draw and label – one from when they were a baby and another from when they were a toddler.
Ensure plenty of description with adjectives as well as the correct usage of capital letters and full stops in your neatest handwriting. |

Geography

To explore a country.
Children will explore a country in Asia. This can be any country of particular interest. They will have the opportunity to create a detailed information page about their nation of choice. In the top right hand corner, they can begin by colouring in an accurate representation of their country’s national flag. In essence, it is a research project which can be done with the support of an Atlas, map and computer. At the foot of the page, there are three lines to include some other amazing facts about their chosen country. |
