Next Step Headship

Are you an aspiring Headteacher who is 12 – 18 months away

from Headship?

South Farnham and George Abbot Teaching Schools are offering a ‘Next Step Headship’ programme for aspiring Headteachers. This programme includes workshops, school visits and mentoring support by a current Headteacher. Participants will also be required to undertake a Leadership Development Project in their school. The programme is designed to support ambitious school leaders as they apply for their first Headteacher position.

This programme is funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership through the Teaching School Council.

A £50 registration fee will be required once a place has been confirmed, this is the only cost.

Places are limited. A selection process may be required if the course is over-subscribed.

In order to register your interest, all applicants are invited to complete the registration process. In addition, each participant registration requires a supporting application be completed by their current Headteacher. Applications can be found via the following links:

The first 100 days as a Head

  • Working with Governors
  • Getting to grips with school finance
  • Application stage 1: Choosing the right school
  • Application stage 2: Making your application stand out



Face to face Day 2:

Application stage 3: Mock Interview day

An opportunity to apply for and be interviewed for a HT position of an anonymised school


Face to face Day 3:

Maintaining a school as outstanding

Managing a school in a changing landscape

Getting the best out of your SLT

Possible workshops:

  • Personnel challenges/Dealing with difficult people
  • High impact communication - drawing upon NLP techniques, this session will explore effective communication techniques


Quad visits

Visits to one another’s schools

1:1 One hour career consultation including completing course review and agreeing next steps.

Performance Management

School self-evaluation and review: Drawing on the inspection framework to evaluate the effectiveness of a school

All participants will undertake a Leadership Development Project throughout the course. The exact nature and remit of this will be agreed with the Headteacher Coach. The outcomes of this development project will be celebrated at the end of programme event.

Pre-course and inter-sessional tasks will be incorporated into the format of the face-to-face days.
