To know the different spellings of the long 'i' sound, different spellings of the long ‘e’ sound and recognise different types of sentence.

 

Spelling Focus:  The long i sound can be spelt in a number of different ways, which can make it a challenge to know which one to apply in different situations. However, there are some helpful patterns. The long e sound can also be spelt in a number of different ways, which can make it a challenge to know which one to apply in different situations. However, there are some helpful patterns. Complete the spelling activities and take note of any patterns you spot as you progress.

 

Grammar Focus: Sentence: How the grammatical patterns in a sentence indicate its function as a statement, question, exclamation or command. Write at least 2 examples a statement, question, exclamation and command.

 

Examples:

Statement – The young monkey loves to eat bananas.

Question – What do young monkeys love to eat?

Exclamation – What a hungry monkey!

Command – Put down that bunch of bananas.

To explore how words are used to plan a riddle.

 

Children to use sheet to plan a riddle. Think of a word with a smaller word inside it, e.g. giants. Think of a question that gives a clue to the bigger word, e.g. what kind of ants eat small boys? Giants. What kind of key swings in the trees? Monkeys. Try out your riddles on a parent or older sibling. Write down your best ideas. Use your ideas to plan a teaser poem, beginning with:

To explore a country.

 

Children will explore a country in Africa. This can be any country of particular interest. They will have the opportunity to create a detailed information page about their nation of choice. In the top right hand corner, they can begin by colouring in an accurate representation of their country’s national flag. In essence, it is a research project which can be done with the support of an Atlas, map and computer. At the foot of the page, there are three lines to include some other amazing facts about their chosen country.
